It’s hard work being a mom and Mother’s Day is the one day of the year when everything should be all about her! From sleepless nights and endless days of caring for you, to making your childhood magical on every holiday, to being your rock when you need her most, your mom has the hardest and most rewarding job there is. To help get your Mother’s Day on a roll, here is a list of our favorite fun Mother’s Day ideas and activities.
If your mom loves to sleep in, then breakfast in bed is a great activity for the family to do together to surprise her when she wakes up. If your mom is an early riser, we’re sorry you might have to get up super early to do this fun Mother’s Day idea! You’ll need a tray table for dining in bed. Get little ones involved by having them help you set the table or do simple cooking like cracking eggs. Alongside breakfast, you could make it look extra special by adding a small vase with a couple of flowers or tying some Mother's Day balloons to the tray.
One of our favorite fun Mother’s Day activities and ideas is a tea party! Your Mother’s Day tea party can be as simple as getting out the play tea set to pretend to drink tea with your little ones, or it can be a more sophisticated affair for mothers whose children are grown up. You could also make it a larger-scale tea party to celebrate all your friends who are also mothers. To decorate for your tea party, we suggest going for floral accents in your decorations and tableware. To reinforce the tea party theme, let your guests know to dress accordingly and serve menu items like tea sandwiches, mini quiches, and small baked goods. Be sure to have a variety of teas and a range of additives like honey, lemons, sugar, and cream. If you want to make it a tea party with a more adult kick, serve up some spiked iced teas.
If you want to make a big impression affordably this Mother’s Day, a fun idea is to go crazy with balloons. You can use latex balloons to cover an entire wall, create a balloon arch, make a garland to line a room, or even do a classic balloon drop. We also love a balloon bouquet made with mylar balloons that express your appreciation. Order your balloon art to be delivered as a surprise, or gather your family the night before to blow up balloons and get your pre-Mother’s Day activities started together!
Even if you don’t own a boat, there are other ways to take your Mother’s Day activities out on the water. You could rent a boat for the day and decorate it to celebrate your mum, or you could look for guided boat tours. If you live by the ocean, there are likely guided fishing tours and whale and seal-watching tours. If the ocean is a bit too far, check large local lakes and canals for guided boat tours. While out on the water, surprise your mother with any cards or gifts you plan to give her.
If it’s a warm sunny day, take your Mother’s Day activities outside with a picnic! Set the scene with some classic gingham plaid plates, cups, and napkins. Whether you’re taking the picnic to a local park or just heading to the backyard, you’ll need some sandwiches, snacks, and drinks to take with you. Plan for some outside games, too! Bring a frisbee, a mini corn hole set, a pair of binoculars for spotting wildlife, and maybe some fishing rods, or whatever fun outdoor activities your mom likes doing.
What mother doesn’t enjoy a gift that was handcrafted with love by her children? No matter what age her children are, she’ll keep a handprint on a piece of paper from a 21-month-old to a 21-year-old. If you’re not a crafty person, look online for DIY craft kits that provide you with everything you need to create a personal work of art. Add to your Mother’s Day activities by doing your craft project with your mom, or do it ahead of time with young ones and surprise her. Your craft could be as simple as a handmade card or a silly group photograph idea.
If your mother or the mother of your children loves basketball or hockey, you likely know the NBA and NHL playoffs happen during May, the same month as Mother’s Day. This makes Mother’s Day the perfect opportunity for you to throw a party celebrating her and her favorite team. Find mini sports games to include in your Mother’s Day activities like table hockey and H-O-R-S-E. Decorate your home with basketball or hockey party supplies and tableware and serve up some game-day appetizers!
